Nikon D3200: Full time auto focus performance and noise 18-55mm at 18mm no mic - 1:12 18-55mm at 55mm no mic - 1:56 18-55mm at 18mm with ME-1 mic - 2:40 18-55mm at 55mm with ME-1 mic - 3:24 18-200mm at 18mm no mic - 4:08 18-200mm at 200mm no mic - 4:52 18-200mm at 18mm with ME-1 mic - 5:37 18-200mm at 200mm with ME-1 mic - 6:21 Those eight video samples recorded with the Nikon D3200 test it's ability to maintain focus in the full time auto focus mode and show not only the noise/sound produced by the lens while the camera does this, but it also shows the difference in noise generated by the 18-55mm lens and it's external focus AF-S system and the 18-200mm lens and it's internal focus (IF) AF-S system. I also test the ME-1 Stereo Microphone and find out how much less noise from focusing is picked up while using this microphone attached to the camera. I also show how to activate and disable the full time auto focus function and I show how to pick your favorite focus option whether it be AF-S Single Servo AF, AF-F Continuous Full Time Servo AF, or MF Manual Focus. The Vibration Reduction (VR) function of the lenses is active during this entire video. It is a fantastic function and works quite well to stabilize the image. Olympus's new flagship Micro four thirds camera the OM-D E-M5 Versus Nikon's Shiny new D800 Full frame shoooter. (& yes, dedicated reviews of both cameras are coming soon ;) ) Olympus OM-D E-M5 with the fantastic M.Zuiko Digital ED 45mm F1.8 The Nikon D800 with the much lusted after Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G... It's as close as makes no real difference an equivalent (effective) focal length FOV on each camera. (the D800 is full frame, and the E-M5 has a 2x crop factor, giving the 45mm lens an 35mm equivalent focal length of 90mm) Both set to record 1080@30P, using the Standard picture profiles on each, ISO set to 200, shutter & aperture set to full manual mode, and Focus S-AF. And cameras were recording each scene simultaneously, mounted to the same monopod (using a hot-shoe extension bar & appropriate adapters) This May not be a fair fight in stills mode, given the VAST difference in megapixel resolution... 16MP vs 36MP... But in VIDEO mode, where the play-ground is levelled as much as posisble, and with both cameras independently impressing video shooters in early testing & reviews... Well, it proved to be a very interesting head-to-head shootout indeed... What do you think? ...

I am sure many of you wold like to know how I captured this video. The main camera was the Nikon D4 wth the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR II shooting at 720p 60FPS. The second camera was the Nikon D3200 with the Nikon 35mm F1.8 shooting 720p 60FPS. The final camera which I was hand holding was the contour roam which is an underwater action camera. I was very happy with how the contour cam handles itself in and out of the water. The clarity was just really amazing both with video and audio under water. Who knew you could pick up a camera for $199 that will let you swim with the thing and capture amazing under water footage. Because of all the questions I have been receiving about how the D3200 compares to the D5100 I decided to make a video on the topic. It is somewhat confusing deciding between the two because of their similarities. Even though the D3200 fills the spot just below the D5100 in Nikon's lineup it is in some ways better. The D3200 offers the better video mode, there are more frame rate options available. The D3200 allows the user to select up to 60 frames per second (in 720p) while the D5100 can only manage a max of 30 fps (in 1080p). Also included in the D3200 is the ability to use it with Nikon's new WU-1a wireless adapter ($59.99 USD). This wireless module allows connectivity to an iOS or Android device, an app is available for both platforms. Because of it's ability to record 14-bit raw files and it's 1/3rd stop ISO adjustment the D5100 is still best for stills. It also allows for white balance bracketing while the D3200 does not. Despite it's less filled out video options it has a swiveling LCD which will make shooting video easier. The D5100 usually retails for $849.99 USD with a lens but is currently $649.99 after instant savings. The D3200 is currently $699.99 USD. Bottom line, if you want to do more with video I recommend the D3200. If you are mainly going to use the cameras for still photography I would recommend the D5100. The best recommendation of all is to wait a bit, it is getting obvious that a "D5200" is coming sooner rather than later. The D5100 replacement <b>...</b>
