I compare the differences between a professional level lens (Nikon 70-200 VRII) and an entry level "kit" lens (Nikon 55-200 VR). The Nikon AF-S 55-200 DX lens is considered to be an entry level lens. It is often bundled with Nikon's entry level DSLR's, this is why some people refer to it as a "kit" lens. From an optical standpoint it is a pretty decent performing lens. If you are going to use it for photos in good lighting (outdoor) conditions or if you are going to use it with a flash. However it is not the best for low light use because of it's variable design that gives it an aperture of F/5.6 @ 200mm. From a build standpoint this lens is not designed to hold up to the stress of professional use. The lens barrel is entirely made of plastic (including the mount). This lens retails for $250 USD but often sells for $150 when purchased with a Nikon DSLR. The Nikon AF-S 70-200 VR II is the go to telephoto lens for professional users. Unlike the 55-200 it is a fixed aperture design with a constant F/2.8 aperture. In addition to letting in 2 stops (4 times) more light than the 55-200 this lens is also of superior build. The mount and most of the barrel is made of metal, this lens also feature weather sealing around the mount and between the focusing and zoom rings. It also using a faster type of AF-S focusing motor. This lens retails for $2400 USD but can occasionally be found for $2000 if it is purchased with a professional level Nikon DSLR. Follow me on Twitter <b>...</b>

Here I test the D5100 with the (very loud) 18-55 lens that comes with the kit its a great cheap lens (around 200) and wonderful all purpose lens, but noisy for video, the d5100 seems to take a bit of time to focus, but over all its good, i bought the D5100 for the price point and for the continuous AF during video, but after using it i find that i like manual focus for video better because its faster and much less noticeable for continuous scenes, i will get the d7000 hopefully by the 1rst and try to compare. the iso adjust dynamically in auto mode as well as aperture (science... im making a note here... huge success)
